Atsikana Pa Ulendo
(Girls on the Move), Malawi

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Atsikana Pa Ulendo (APU) is dedicated to helping young Malawian women achieve self-sufficiency through education.

Their mission is to provide high quality education to girls from the rural areas of Malawi who would be otherwise unable to continue with their education beyond primary school, due to a lack of financial support.

They aim to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of young girls and women living in poverty and in so doing, spark a ripple effect of reduced poverty, illness, malnutrition, early marriage, overpopulation and gender bias that will be felt and magnified throughout the country of Malawi and throughout the world.  Their vision is of a world where young girls have equal opportunities to realize their full potential as human beings.

DOLLARS DONATED

West Shore Rotary involvement with Christie Johnson and Memory began with Christie seeking support for drought relief for Memory’s home village soon after West Shore Rotary was formed.  This then led to the water well project for the village and grew into the Atsikana Pa Ulendo Girls School project.   Since then West Shore Rotary ($4000 per year), along with individual members, have supported a number of girls in the school and contributed toward infrastructure at the school.

We have water … and lot’s of it! Thanks to the initiative of experts at WASRAG (Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group) and the donation of funds from the West Shore, Sooke and Oak Bay Rotary Clubs, the APU water system has been upgraded. We now have a very deep well with a submersible pump that is powered by solar panels. There is finally enough water at APU! Even now, late in the dry season, and with the school full of students, there is plenty of water. Our final challenge was  to build a second water tower ($20,000) so that all of the water that is being pumped can be stored.
