BEAR: Be Excited About Reading
Members reading with elementary students, and books for local schools and libraries.
Following our involvement with the Beecher Bay (Sc'ianew) community and the Tribal Journey canoe trip, West Shore Rotary and Rotary District 5020 provided $5,000 toward a library on the reserve.
That project led to BEAR (Be Excited About Reading), which started in the reserve library and later moved to Hans Helgesen Elementary, where members read with students. BEAR has received additional funds for books, including $1,009 from the Thrifty Foods Smile Card program in 2013.
We've also supported early literacy through the 1000×5 program, which gets books into the hands of young children, and bought books for the Ruth King Elementary library.
