Atsikana Pa Ulendo (Girls on the Move), Malawi
From drought relief and a village well to a thriving girls' secondary school in Malawi.
West Shore Rotary's involvement with Christie Johnson and Memory began soon after our club was formed, when Christie asked for help with drought relief for Memory's home village. That led to a water well for the village, and then to Atsikana Pa Ulendo (APU), a girls' secondary school.
APU helps girls from rural Malawi continue their education past primary school when their families can't afford it. Our club (about $4,000 a year) and individual members have supported many students and contributed to buildings at the school.
With the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group (WASRAG) and the Sooke and Oak Bay Rotary clubs, we helped upgrade the school's water system with a deep well and a solar-powered pump, and a second $20,000 water tower so all the water pumped can be stored. Today the school serves about 360 girls and is self-sustaining.
