Help for Haiti
Making two Haitian orphanages safe, healthy and self-sustaining after the 2010 earthquake.
After the 2010 earthquake, the City of Langford teamed up with Rotary on the West Shore to help the Baby Jesus Orphanage in Port-au-Prince. Over a number of visits, volunteer teams made it secure and functional.
In 2013 the team was asked to visit the Divine Hand Orphanage, home to 52 children and on the brink of collapse. With the agreement of its founder, Doris Abraham, the club committed to support and upgrade it, and Help for Haiti was born. Volunteer teams made four visits, securing the orphanage's tenancy and building kitchens and bathrooms, a secure fence and a moveable chicken coop, so the children have eggs to eat and to sell.
Help for Haiti worked with one orphanage at a time: first making sure the children were safe, healthy, happy and in school, then funding projects to make the orphanage self-sustaining. Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett was one of its driving forces.
