Victoria Primary School, Busabaga, Uganda
Concrete floors and textbooks for a village school that replaced a classroom under a tree.
In 2000, elders in Busabaga, Uganda, asked for help to build a primary school. The village is remote, and children who went to school walked two to three hours each way, which was especially dangerous for girls.
West Shore Rotary provided $1,000, with a $2,500 District grant, $1,000 from the Harbourside Rotary Club and $1,500 from the Project Unity Committee: $6,000 for concrete floors through the New Hope School Society. Partners later gave a further $6,000 for textbooks.
In total, a 10-room school with two offices was built with local labour and materials, providing education for up to 600 children. A latrine and a new kitchen that vents smoke outside were added in 2014.
